So, I'm out with Natalie yesterday having a "girls" afternoon. We were looking for an Easter dress and made it just in the nick of time to Steak and Shake for half price shakes....Whew. It was close. I think we pulled up at 4 on the nose...Natalie was relieved...Anybody knows her knows that she can get crazy over some dessert...haha.
Anyway, we pulled in the driveway and Justus Derero comes running..."MAMA LOOK! MAMA LOOK!" His bottom tooth had been wiggly for awhile....Trevis popped that little sucker right out. Then, we explained the tooth fairy. He looked at us like we were crazy. I guess it does sound crazy.. Trevis put his tooth in the little basket we bought in Ethiopia for teeth....It's a tiny little basket and we bought one for each kid just for the tooth fairy b/c it's the perfect size....He didn't really want to sleep with his tooth, but he humored us.
This morning, I said, "let's go check on your tooth". I showed him the money. He thought it was mine....Later in the day, I took him to Target and he picked out a couple of Matchbox cars and made his first purchase. He wasn't thrilled with giving the guy his money, but he sure was happy to have the van and truck....
So....with wiggly teeth and all....It's had me thinking...I'm guessing Justus isn't really 4 1/2 (His fine motor and gross motor skills as well as attention span are really good as well...). He is probably 5 1/2 but his birth certificate says he's 4 1/2 so we're rolling with it. This leads me to another dilemma. Technically, with his birthday being in Sept. he is old enough to go to kindergarten. The teacher in me said, "hold up wait a minute". He will go when he's almost 6 not when he's four about to turn five....Even though my gut tells me he's probably almost 6, he would still be one of the youngest in his class on paper. Then, I thought well...hmmm....I have already registered him for two day a week preschool for the fall. It is like Mothers-Day-Out, but very structured and learning oriented. I can do that or kindergarten readiness....I'm a huge advocate of kindergarten readiness. I think it really helps kids on the maturity level....Honestly, I could always tell which kids in my class had a late birthday or those who were the youngest. Most kids can do ok in kindergarten but it catches up in first grade. First grade is a hard grade...so many new skills....
My heart just isn't ready for him to go to kindergarten readiness b/c he would be their the full school day five days a week, soooooooooo as of right now, I'm sticking with the thought of preschool two days a week this fall......If he's the tallest kid in his kindergarten class, that's ok with me....It's in his genetics to be tall anyway. On the other days, we'll be working away learning sounds and letters at home and all the skills kiddos need for kindergarten and first grade....Hopefully, that way, he'll enter kindergarten speaking fluently and confident in who he is.....
It's all good though...It doesn't matter if he's four or five...He's just right for our family and he'll enter school when the time is right....
Oh the thoughts we think....
Much Love,
