Yesterday morning after I dropped the kids off at school, I decided I maybe should get some groceries since we were about out of everything and the whining and complaining had commenced. I was excited the kids were back in school, but going to the grocery isn't exactly my idea of a good time on my first day of freedom. (Did I just type that?) So, I headed on over to Kroger...The parking lot was pretty full and I was like, "What's going on?". In my mind, it felt like it was a Monday b/c the kids were going to school. However, it was really Wednesday. I parked, went inside, and began shopping. I got to about the 3rd aisle and was like, "I'm the only young person in this store today." There were senior citizens EVERYWHERE!! I mean..like 5 in each aisle. So, then it hit me....IT'S SENIOR DISCOUNT DAYS!! By the time I got to the end, they were serving the seniors breakfast and drinks and there were another 100 of them eating....Seriously, I was beginning to feel like I needed to make a break for it.....I whirled back to the very first aisle to see what the fresh soups of the day were and as I took the corner almost on two wheels, a man that works at Kroger said, "excuse me m'am". I turned around and he said, "Where did you get your shirt?"
I explained to him how I asked for it for Christmas from my mom from a family who is selling them as a fundraiser (click here to get one). He said, "oh". I asked him if he knew someone adopting b/c he had speckled gray hair and appeared to be a little older....He told me actually that he and his wife adopted a little girl. He showed me her picture. I asked where he adopted from and he said, "China". Then, he shared his story (This is him talking now as best as I can remember.)
"I had been saving for a Harley Davidson motorcycle. The one I really wanted cost $25K, so each month I would sock money away to save to buy it. My brother and I wanted to ride our Harleys one day out to Yellowstone National Park. Well, I saved and saved. During that time, my brother passed away. So, my Dad said he wanted to go to Yellowstone so he and I went out there. On the way, I picked up something and read about how little girls are treated in China and I knew right then my wife and I needed to adopt a baby girl. I told my wife and of course she got all the paperwork done and I took all that money I was saving for my Harley and put it toward the adoption expenses for our new baby girl. I wanted to name her Harley, but my wife wouldn't let me. We named her Hally instead."
I told him I thought that was a good compromise on the name.;) You see, he and his wife had grown kids now. He went on to share about how when his little girl climbs in the bed and wants him to read a bedtime story...Well, you just can't put a pricetag on that.
I just shared a little of our story, but honestly my heart was so full from listening to him. It was definately a divine appt. I told "T" how good it was to meet him and if he'd give me his email I'd send him the link for the shirt. He went to the deli, ripped a box, and wrote it down for me. I tucked it in my purse.
I don't know why, but I continue to be amazed by God's ability to bring children home into loving families when hearts are yielded to him and receptive to His call.
What a blessing!

ReplyDeleteGod does put people in our path!
Before Christmas, I met a woman at a toy store that adopted 3 from Korea many years ago... We talked for about an hour. She showed me a ton of pictures of her grandkids.
Very cool...thanks for sharing! I bought my husband that same "got love?" sweatshirt for Christmas!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story...and sweatshirt!! :) Seriously, that story was so sweet. I loved the name compromise! What a reminder that the Lord has not forgotten these children and He is and will use people from all walks of life and age to care for them!! Hoping to hear news of your travel soon!
